Holden Australia, and the LPG option is ready to go. The Holden Cruze 2010, a mid size well optioned family vehicle is the first cab off the rank for Holden into optional LPG. Now this is not a new idea LPG option has been around now in a dedicated and LPG/Petrol models for a decade . LPG itself has been used widely and safely for well over 20 years and Australia has been at the heart of the LPG usage worldwide.
In the beginning only two LPG systems were sold the IMPCO and Tartarini, One from the USA and the other European. They were basic and in most cases quite safe. The Jeep Cherokee had a bad run in the mid 1990's with several catching fire after the aftermarket fitment bought the gas lines too close to the manifold of the straight six engine. This usually occurred during towing and usually on a up hill environment.
Since those day LPG units and fitters have improved out of site, Hi tech and tested.
So for Australia the Holden cruze could well be a good alternative fuel car alternative. Reliability is good, fuel consumptions is nearly as good as the petrol and performance would not be a deterrent for a would be purchaser of this style of car. However LPG price is unreliable. It should be cheap as chips but the fuel companies seem to dictate there own price on this abundant fuel.. It almost seems that the extra cost to have this more environmentally friendly fuel fitted seems to cancel out the fuel savings for the average commuter.
The vehicle is good and GM Holden will no doubt extend this option through the range. On a positive note Holden will warranty its engine that has this option, Now that's something not many have done in the past especially on after market non factory systems.
Good new for the Holden Plant in Elizabeth South Australia is that this site will be the hub for this vehicle.
Please note the Cruz is also available in 2.0 turbo diesel |
